Comparing firn temperature profile retrieval based on the firn densification model and microwave data over the Antarctica

Abstract. The firn temperature is a crucial parameter for understanding firn densification processes of the Antarctic Ice Sheet (AIS). Simulations with firn densification models (FDM) can be conceptualized as a function that relies on forcing data, comprising temperature and surface mass balance, together with tuning parameters determined based on measured depth-density profiles from different locations. The simulated firn temperature is obtained in the firn densification models by solving the one-dimensional heat conduction equation. Microwave satellite data on brightness temperature at different frequencies can also provide remote sensing monitoring of firn temperature variations across the AIS (i.e., the L-band up to 1500 meters). The firn temperature can be estimated by the microwave emission model and the regression method, but these two methods need more observations of temperature profiles for correction and validation. Therefore, we compiled a dataset with temperature profiles and temperature observations with depth around 10 meters. In this work, two methods were used to simulate/retrieve firn temperature across the Antarctic ice sheet. One method estimated the temperature profiles by solving the one-dimensional heat conduction equation driven by reanalyses and regional climate models, which are used in the simulation of FDMs. The other one established a relationship between the multi-frequency brightness temperature data from microwave remote sensing satellites and the firn temperature.

Retrieval of temperature profiles in tropical cyclone Nanmadol from resampled advanced technology microwave sounder observations

In the past, satellite microwave sounding data are often utilized for retrieving the thermal structure of tropical cyclones (TCs). However, the spatial resolutions and scan pattern of the instruments vary from one to another and can affect the retrievals of TC structures. In this study, Backus-Gilbert Inversion (BGI), ATOVS and AVHRR Pre-processing Package (AAPP) filter and N × N field-of-views (FOVs) average algorithms are utilized to resample the Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS) data and the impacts from different resampling algorithms on brightness temperature structures and retrieved atmospheric temperature are analyzed. It is shown that for ATMS channel 1 to 2, the larger differences between original and resampled brightness temperatures are found in cloudy areas and at the land-ocean boundary. When ATMS channels 1–16 data are resampled to the AMSU-like resolution, the brightness temperatures become less noisy at channel 3 to 16 and can lead to a higher convergence rate in the one-dimension variational (1DVAR) algorithm. Furthermore, the warm core intensity of a tropical storm of Nanmadol is reduced by about 2.5 K and its size becomes smaller after the ATMS data is resampled to the AMSU resolution.

A Convolutional Neural Network and Attention-Based Retrieval of Temperature Profile for a Satellite Hyperspectral Microwave Sensor

As numerical weather forecasting advances, there is a growing demand for higher-quality atmospheric data. Hyperspectral instruments can capture more atmospheric information and increase vertical resolution, but there has been limited research into retrieval algorithms for obtaining hyperspectral microwaves in the future. This study proposes an atmospheric temperature profile detection algorithm based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Local Attention Mechanisms for local feature extraction, applied to hyperspectral microwave sensors. The study utilizes the method of information entropy to extract more effective channels in the vicinities of 60 GHz, 118 GHz, and 425 GHz. The algorithm uses the brightness temperature as the input of the network. The algorithm addresses common issues encountered in conventional networks, such as overfitting, gradient explosion, and gradient vanishing. Additionally, this method isolates the three oxygen-sensitive frequency bands for modularized local feature extraction training, thereby avoiding abrupt changes in brightness temperature between adjacent frequency bands. More importantly, the algorithm considers the correlation between multiple channels and information redundancy, focusing on variations in local information. This enhances the effectiveness of hyperspectral microwave channel information extraction. We simulated the brightness temperatures of the selected channels through ARTS and divided them into training, validation, and test sets. The retrieval capability of the proposed method is validated on a test dataset, achieving a root mean square error of 1.46 K and a mean absolute error of 1.4 K for temperature profile. Detailed comparisons are also made between this method and other commonly used networks for atmospheric retrieval. The results demonstrate that the proposed method significantly improves the accuracy of temperature profile retrieval, particularly in capturing fine details, and is more adaptable to complex environments. The model also exhibits scalability, extending from one-dimensional (pressure level) to three-dimensional space. The error for each pressure level is controlled within 0.7 K and the average error is within 0.4 K, demonstrating effectiveness across different scales with impressive results. The computational efficiency and accuracy have both been improved when handling a large amount of radiation data.

Measurement uncertainties of scanning microwave radiometers and their influence on temperature profiling

Abstract. In order to improve observations of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL), the European Meteorological Network, EUMETNET, and the Aerosol, Clouds, and Trace Gases Research Infrastructure, ACTRIS, are currently working on building networks of microwave radiometers (MWRs). Elevation-scanning MWRs are well suited to obtain temperature profiles of the atmosphere, especially within the ABL. Understanding and assessing measurement uncertainties of state-of-the-art scanning MWRs is therefore crucial for accurate temperature profiling. In this paper, we discuss measurement uncertainties due to the instrument setup and originating from external sources, namely (1) horizontal inhomogeneities of the atmosphere, (2) pointing errors or a tilt of the instrument, (3) physical obstacles in the line of sight of the instrument, and (4) radio frequency interference (RFI). Horizontal inhomogeneities from observations at the Jülich Observatory for Cloud Evolution (JOYCE) are shown to have a small impact on retrieved temperature profiles (<|0.22K| in the 25th and 75th percentiles below 3000 m). Typical instrument tilts, that could be caused by uncertainties during the instrument setup, also have a very small impact on temperature profiles and are smaller than 0.1 K below 3000 m for up to 1∘ of tilt. Physical obstacles at ambient temperatures and in the line of sight and filling the complete beam of the MWR at the lowest elevation angle of 5.4∘ have to be at least 600 m away from the instrument in order to have an impact of less than 0.1 K on obtained temperature profiles. If the obstacle is 5 K warmer than its surroundings then the obstacle should be at least 2700 m away. Finally, we present an approach on how to detect RFI with an MWR with azimuth and elevation-scanning capabilities. In this study, we detect RFIs in a water vapor channel that does not influence temperature retrievals but would be relevant if the MWR were used to detect horizontal humidity inhomogeneities.

The Study of Internal Gravity Waves in the Earth’s Atmosphere by Radio Occultations: A Review

Internal gravity waves (IGWs) in the middle atmosphere are the main source of mesoscale fluctuations of wind and temperature. The parameterization of IGWs and study of their climatology is necessary for the development of global atmospheric circulation models. In this review, we focus on the application of Radio Occultation (RO) observations for the retrieval of IGW parameters. (1) The simplest approach employs the retrieved temperature profiles. It is based on the fact that IGWs are highly anisotropic structures and can be accurately retrieved by RO. The basic assumption is that all the temperature fluctuations are caused by IGWs. The smoothed background temperature profile defines the the Brunt–Väisälä frequency, which, together with the temperature fluctuations, defines the IGW specific potential energy. Many studies have derived the distribution and climatology of potential energy, which is one of the most important characteristics of IGWs. (2) More detailed analysis of the temperature profiles is based on the derivation of the temperature fluctuation spectra. For saturated IGWs, the spectra must obey the power law with an exponent of −3. Such spectra are obtained by using Wave Optical (WO) processing. (3) More advanced analysis employs space–frequency analysis. It is based on phase-sensitive techniques like cross S- or wavelet transforms in order to identify propagating IGWs. (4) Another direction is the IGW parameter estimate from separate temperature profiles applying the stability condition in terms of the Richardson number. In this framework, a necessary condition is formulated that defines whether or not the temperature fluctuations can be related to IGW events. The temperature profile retrieval involves integral transforms and filtering that constitute the observation filter. (5) A simpler filter is implemented by the analysis of the RO amplitude fluctuation spectra, based on the diffraction theory in the framework of the phase screen and weak fluctuation approximations. The two spectral parameters, the external scale and the structural characteristic, define the specific potential energy. This approach allows the derivation of the spacial and seasonal distributions of IGW activity. We conclude that the success of IGW study by RO is stimulated by a large number of RO observations and advanced techniques based on Fourier and space–time analysis, physical equations describing IGWs, and diffraction theory.

Correction method for temperature measurements inside clouds using rotational Raman lidar.

Rotational Raman lidar is an important technique for detecting atmospheric temperature. However, in cloud regions with strong elastic scattering conditions, elastic scattering crosstalk (ESC) is prevalent due to insufficient out-of-band suppression of the optical filter, resulting significant deviations in temperature retrieval. To address this challenge, a temperature correction technique for optically-thin clouds based on the backscatter ratio is proposed. Using the least-squares method, a temperature correction function is formulated based on the relationship between the ESC and backscatter ratio of clouds. Subsequently, the backscatter ratio is used to correct the rotational Raman ratio of clouds, thereby obtaining the vertical distribution of atmospheric temperature within the cloud layer. The feasibility of this method was assessed through numerical simulations and experimentally validated using a temperature and aerosol detection lidar at the Xi'an University of Technology (XUT). The results indicate that the difference between the retrieved temperature profile under high signal-to-noise ratio conditions and radiosonde data is less than 1.5 K. This correction technique enables atmospheric temperature measurements under elastic scattering conditions with a backscatter ratio less than 115, advancing research on atmospheric structure and cloud microphysics.

The second Venus flyby of BepiColombo mission reveals stable atmosphere over decades

Studies of the Venusian mesosphere provide important information about the current state of the entire Venusian atmosphere. This includes information about the dense cloud structure, its vertical thermal profile, temperature fields, and the resulting dynamical and meteorological processes that contribute to a deeper understanding of the climatologically different evolutionary paths of Earth and Venus. However, the last measurements were acquired in 1983 during Venera-15 mission. In this paper, results of mid-infrared spectral measurements of the Venusian atmosphere are presented. Here we show Mercury Radiometer and Thermal Infrared Spectrometer (MERTIS) measurements of the Venusian atmosphere during the second flyby of BepiColombo mission on its way to Mercury. Our Venus measurements provide reliable retrievals of mesospheric temperature profiles and cloud parameters between 60 and 75 km altitude, although MERTIS was only designed to operate in Mercury environment. Our results are in good agreement with the Venera-15 mission findings. This indicates the stability of the Venusian atmosphere on time scales of decades.

Investigation of Titan’s South Polar HCN Cloud during Southern Fall Using Microphysical Modeling

Ice clouds in Titan’s polar stratosphere are implicated in radiative heating and cooling and in transporting volatile organic compounds from where they form in the upper atmosphere to the surface of the moon. In early southern fall, Cassini detected a large, unexpected cloud at an altitude of 300 km over Titan’s south pole. The cloud, which was found to contain HCN ice, was inconsistent with the most recent measurements of temperature in the same location and suggested that the atmosphere had to be 100 K cooler than expected. However, changes to Cassini’s orbit shortly after the cloud’s appearance precluded further observations, and, consequently, the atmospheric conditions and the details of the formation and evolution of the cloud remain unknown. We address this gap in the observational record by using microphysical cloud modeling to estimate the parameter space consistent with published measurements. Based on the nearest available temperature profile retrievals and other observations, we hypothesize that the cloud forms around 300 km and then descends until it reaches the cold lower stratosphere by late southern fall. The observations can be simulated using a cloud microphysical model by introducing a descending cold layer with temperatures near 100 K. In simulations of this scenario, the precipitation from this cloud rapidly removes over 70% of the HCN vapor from the stratosphere. This result suggests that vapor descending into the polar stratosphere during early fall is mostly removed from the stratosphere before the onset of winter and does not circulate to lower latitudes.

Evaluation of Temperature and Humidity Profiles Retrieved from Fengyun-4B and Implications for Typhoon Assimilation and Forecasting

Fengyun-4B (FY-4B) is the first operational satellite from China’s latest generation of geostationary meteorological satellites. It is equipped with the Geostationary Interferometric Infrared Sounder (GIIRS), which is able to obtain highly accurate atmospheric temperature and humidity profiles through hyperspectral detection in long- and mid-wave infrared spectral bands. In this study, the accuracy of the FY-4B/GIIRS temperature and humidity profile retrievals over two months is evaluated using radiosonde observations and ERA5 reanalysis data. We go a step further to investigate the impact of the satellite retrievals on assimilation and forecasts for Typhoons Chaba and Ma-on in 2022. Results reveal that the root-mean-square difference (RMSD) for the FY-4B/GIIRS temperature and humidity profile retrievals were within 1 K and 1.5 g/kg, respectively, demonstrating high overall accuracy. Moreover, assimilating temperature and humidity profiles from FY-4B/GIIRS positively impacts model analysis and prediction, improving typhoon track and intensity forecasts. Additionally, improvements have been discovered in predicting precipitation, particularly with high-magnitude rainfall events.

Thermal Sounding of the Martian Atmosphere Using the ACS TIRVIM FT-IR Spectrometer on Board ExoMars TGO: Method for Solving the Inverse Problem

This paper presents a method for solving the inverse problem of thermal sounding using calibrated data from the ACS TIRVIM experiment on board the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter. The 1.7–17 µm range TIRVIM Fourier spectrometer as part of the ACS instrument complex aboard the ExoMars TGO operates in the nadir and solar occultation modes in orbit around Mars. The main scientific goal of TIRVIM in the nadir observation mode is the long-term constant monitoring of the thermal structure of the Martian atmosphere and the general content of aerosols and water vapor from measurements in the range of 5–16.7 µm (600–2000 cm–1). To process the TIRVIM nadir measurements, an algorithm was developed, allowing the retrieval of the vertical temperature profile from the surface to 60 km, the surface temperature, and the general content of dust and water ice in the atmosphere from the TIRVIM spectrum in the range of 600–1250 cm–1, as well as the water vapor column abundance according to measurements in the range of 1250–1830 cm–1. The processing method widely uses the achievements of previous similar experiments, taking into account the features of the TIRVIM spectra. Using the developed method 2.28 × 106 spectra obtained by TIRVIM in nadir by regular measurements, were processed with retrieval of the thermal structure up to 60 km altitude and the aerosol content in the atmosphere as well as additional 2.3 × 105 specially averaged TIRVIM spectra, were processed with retrieval of the water vapor column abundancein the Martian atmosphere.

Retrieval of temperature and humidity profiles from ground-based high-resolution infrared observations using an adaptive fast iterative algorithm

Abstract. Various retrieval algorithms have been developed for retrieving temperature and water vapor profiles from Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer (AERI) observations. The physical retrieval algorithm, named AERI Optimal Estimation (AERIoe), outperforms other retrieval algorithms in many aspects except the retrieval time, which is significantly increased due to the complex radiative transfer process. The calculation of the Jacobian matrix is the most computationally intensive step of the physical retrieval algorithm. Interestingly, an analysis of the change in AERI observations' information content with respect to Jacobians revealed that the AERIoe algorithm's performance presents negligible dependence on these metrics. Thus, the Jacobian matrix could remain unchanged when the variation in the atmospheric state is small in the retrieval process to reduce the most time-consuming computation. On the basis of the above findings, a fast physical–iterative retrieval algorithm was proposed by adaptively recalculating Jacobians in keeping with the changes in the atmospheric state. Experiments with synthetic observations demonstrate that the proposed method experiences an average reduction in retrieval time by an impressive 59 % compared to the original AERIoe algorithm while achieving maximum root-mean-square errors of less than 0.95 K and 0.22 log(ppmv) for heights below 3 km for the temperature and water vapor profile, respectively. Further analyses revealed that the fast-retrieval algorithm reached an acceptable convergence rate of 98.7 %, marginally lower than AERIoe's 99.9 % convergence rate for the 826 cases used in this study.

Machine Learning Model-Based Retrieval of Temperature and Relative Humidity Profiles Measured by Microwave Radiometer

The accuracy of temperature and relative humidity (RH) profiles retrieved by the ground-based microwave radiometer (MWR) is crucial for meteorological research. In this study, the four-year measurements of brightness temperature measured by the microwave radiometer from Huangpu meteorological station in Guangzhou, China, and the radiosonde data from the Qingyuan meteorological station (70 km northwest of Huangpu station) during the years from 2018 to 2021 are compared with the sonde data. To make a detailed comparison on the performance of machine learning models in retrieving the temperature and RH profiles, four machine learning algorithms, namely Deep Learning (DL), Gradient Boosting Machine (GBM), Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) and Random Forest (RF), are employed and verified. The results show that the DL model performs the best in temperature retrieval (with the root-mean-square error and the correlation coefficient of 2.36 and 0.98, respectively), while the RH of the four machine learning methods shows different excellence at different altitude levels. The integrated machine learning (ML) RH method is proposed here, in which a certain method with the minimum RMSE is selected from the four methods of DL, GBM, XGBoost and RF for a certain altitude level. Two cases on 29 January 2021 and on 10 February 2021 are used for illustration. The case on 29 January 2021 illustrates that the DL model is suitable for temperature retrieval and the ML model is suitable for RH retrieval in Guangzhou. The case on 10 February 2021 shows that the ML RH method reaches over 85% before precipitation, implying the application of the ML RH method in pre-precipitation warnings.

Retrieval of atmospheric temperature and humidity profiles over a tropical coastal station from ground-based Microwave Radiometer using deep learning technique

Ground-based multi-frequency microwave radiometer Profiler (Microwave Radiometer Profiler-MRP) provides valuable information on the altitude distribution of atmospheric humidity and temperature in the troposphere (upto ∼10 km) with high temporal resolution (of ∼1 min) under all-weather condition. These information are vital inputs for characterization of the atmospheric boundary layer, convective cloud systems, local weather modification and for studying the atmospheric dynamics. Potential of such radiometers are well established over the mid-latitude region. Thiruvananthapuram, located in the Indian peninsular region, is one of the first stations in the equatorial region where such an instrument made continuously operational for seven years since 2010 at the tropical coastal station. The instrument measures the brightness temperatures (Tb in Kelvin) at Ka- and V-band frequencies with a temporal resolution of ∼1 min. A trained back-propagation neural network technique based on the radiosonde ascends data for more than one decade obtained by India Meteorological station at Thiruvananthapuram, was used to derive the atmospheric humidity and temperature profiles. This paper presents the implementation of another retrieval technique based on deep learning approach - batch normalization and neural network (BNN) to retrieve temperature and water vapour density (WVD) profiles from Tb values during clear sky conditions and validation of the retrieval accuracies. This inversion model, much faster in computation, consists of two hidden layers and the rectified linear unit (ReLU) is used as the activation function as it can overcome the problems of saturation and vanishing gradients. The Tbs observed by radiometer are corrected by reducing the bias between the simulated Tb, using forward radiative transfer model, and the observed Tb. The validation of retrieved profiles with the radiosonde demonstrates a good retrieval capability, showing a root-mean-square error of 1.8K for temperature, <2 g/m3 for WVD and ∼14% for RH.

A Multiannual Record of Convective Instability in Mars’s Middle Atmosphere from the Mars Climate Sounder

Gravity waves (GW) transfer energy and momentum from the lower to the middle and upper atmospheres of Earth and Mars. Momentum transfer can occur through the wave dissipative process of saturation associated with convective or shear instability. GW saturation both impacts the atmospheric circulation where saturation occurs and also mediates the GW flux above the level of saturation. It was previously demonstrated that convective instabilities are observable in Mars’s middle atmosphere. Here we characterize the seasonal, interannual, and dust event-driven variability in convective instability in Mars’s atmosphere using retrieved temperature profiles from more than 7 Martian yr of observations by the Mars Climate Sounder on board the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The mean probability of convective instability in the middle atmosphere is <1%, except in the upper portions of the winter westerly jets (≈70 km altitude, 60°–75° N/S), near 30°–40° S and ≈60 km altitude on the dayside in southern summer, and in the tropics at 40–50 km altitude around northern fall equinox. Probabilities of convective instability in or near these three regions can increase by an order of magnitude during planetary-scale dust events and some regional-scale dust events. GW-driven drag on both the equatorial easterly jet and winter westerly jet therefore could increase by an order of magnitude during these dust events, as long as changes in GW properties and the local winds do not provide a compensating reduction of the drag.

Retrieval of Atmospheric Temperature Profile from Historical Data and Ground-Based Observations by Using a Machine Learning Algorithm

The atmospheric temperature profile is an important parameter to describe the state of the atmosphere, and it is crucial to climate change research, weather forecasting, and atmospheric parameter retrieval. A machine learning algorithm that incorporates historical observations and ground-based measurements was developed in this study to retrieve the atmospheric temperature profile. Specifically, the deep learning network considered historical observations for the same period and temporally correlated temperature profiles. It combined multi-layer perceptron (MLP) and the convolutional neural network (CNN). MLP derived the features from the ground factors, and CNN captured the essential features associated with the temperature profiles at the current time from latent historical data. Then, the features of the two parts were concatenated to obtain the final network. The construction and parameters of the model were optimized to determine the best model configuration and retrieval performance. The results of the model were evaluated against those of other methods on the same dataset. The model showed a good retrieval precision, which was equivalent to a small retrieval bias, root-mean-square error, and mean absolute error at all altitudes. The analysis of the application of this model to the retrieval of atmospheric temperature profiles indicates that the method is feasible.

Deep Retrieval Architecture of Temperature and Humidity Profiles from Ground-Based Infrared Hyperspectral Spectrometer

Temperature and humidity profiles in the atmospheric boundary layer are essential for climate studies. The ground-based infrared hyperspectral spectrometer has the advantage of measuring radiances emitted from the atmosphere at a high temporal and moderate vertical resolution. In this article, the retrieval of temperature and humidity profiles from ground-based infrared hyperspectral observations is exploited. Although existing inversion algorithms based on physical models or statistical learning have made some progress, they still suffer from high computational complexity or poor performance. Motivated by the strength of the deep learning, we present a deep retrieval architecture (DReA) by skillfully designing a light-weight one-dimensional convolution neural network (CNN) to retrieve the temperature and humidity profiles. Experiments were conducted using atmospheric emitted radiance interferometer (AERI) and radiosonde data to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed DReA. The validation of the DReA with the radiosonde, using 802 profiles with 37 layers below 3 km, presents an excellent retrieval ability with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.87 K for the temperature and 1.06 g/kg for the water vapor mixing ratio. Furthermore, a thorough comparison with commonly used inversion methods such as the traditional back propagation (BP) and the eigenvector (EV) regression method, shows that our proposed DReA method obtains a leading solution in retrieving temperature and humidity profiles.

Stratospheric temperature measurements from nanosatellite stellar occultation observations of refractive bending

Abstract. Stellar occultation observations from space can probe the stratosphere and mesosphere at a fine vertical scale around the globe. Unlike other measurement techniques like radiosondes and aircraft, stellar occultation has the potential to observe the atmosphere above 30 km, and unlike radio occultation, stellar occultation probes fine-scale phenomena with potential to observe atmospheric turbulence. We imaged the refractive bending angle of a star centroid for a series of occultations by the atmosphere. Atmospheric refractivity, density, and then temperature are retrieved from the bending observations with the Abel transformation and Edlén's law, the hydrostatic equation, and the ideal gas law. The retrieval technique is applied to data collected by two nanosatellites operated by Terran Orbital. Measurements were primarily taken by the GEOStare SV2 mission, with a dedicated imaging telescope, supplemented with images captured by spacecraft bus sensors, namely the star trackers on other Terran Orbital missions. The bending angle noise floor is 10 and 30 arcsec for the star tracker and GEOStare SV2 data, respectively. The most significant sources of uncertainty are due to centroiding errors due to the fairly low-resolution stellar images and telescope pointing knowledge derived from noisy satellite attitude sensors. The former mainly affects the star tracker data, while the latter limits the GEOStare SV2 accuracy, with both providing low vertical resolution. This translates to a temperature profile retrieval up to roughly 20 km for both star tracker and GEOStare SV2 datasets. In preparation of an upcoming 2023 mission designed to correct these deficiencies, SOHIP, we simulated bending angle measurements with varying magnitudes of error. The expected maximum altitude of retrieved temperature is 41 km on average for these simulated measurements with a noise floor of 0.39 arcsec. Our work highlights the capabilities of stellar occultation observations from nanosatellites for atmospheric sounding. Future work will investigate high-frequency observations of atmospheric gravity waves and turbulence, mitigating the major uncertainties observed in these datasets.

Detail Enhancement of AIRS/AMSU Temperature and Moisture Profiles Using a 3D Deep Neural Network

Abstract In recent decades, spaceborne microwave and hyperspectral infrared sounding instruments have significantly benefited weather forecasting and climate science. However, existing retrievals of lower-troposphere temperature and humidity profiles have limitations in vertical resolution, and often cannot accurately represent key features such as the mixed-layer thermodynamic structure and the inversion at the planetary boundary layer (PBL) top. Because of the existing limitations in PBL remote sensing from space, there is a compelling need to improve routine, global observations of the PBL and enable advances in scientific understanding and weather and climate prediction. To address this, we have developed a new 3D deep neural network (DNN) that enhances detail and reduces noise in level 2 granules of temperature and humidity profiles from the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS)/Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit (AMSU) sounder instruments aboard NASA’s Aqua spacecraft. We show that the enhancement improves accuracy and detail including key features such as capping inversions at the top of the PBL over land, resulting in improved accuracy in estimations of PBL height.

Temperature and Relative Humidity Profile Retrieval from Fengyun-3D/VASS in the Arctic Region Using Neural Networks

In this study, a new technique is proposed to retrieve temperature and relative humidity profiles under clear sky conditions in the Arctic region based on the artificial neural network (ANN) algorithm using Fengyun-3D (FY-3D) vertical atmospheric sounder suit (VASS: HIRAS, MWTS-II, and MWHS-II) observations. This technology combines infrared (IR) and microwave (MW) observations to improve retrieval accuracy in the middle and low troposphere by reducing the sensitivity of the neural networks (NNs) to cloud coverage. The approach was compared against other methods available in the literature on retrieving profiles only from FY-3D/HIRAS data. Furthermore, its retrieval performance was tested by comparing the NNs’ prediction accuracy versus the corresponding FY-3D/VASS and Aqua/AIRS L2 products. The results showed that: (1) NNs retrieval accuracy is higher during the warm season and over the ocean; (2) the retrieval accuracy of NNs has been significantly improved compared with satellite L2 products; (3) referring to radiosonde observations, the retrieval accuracy of NNs below 600 hPa is effectively improved by adding the information of the MW channel, especially on land where cloud clearing is more difficult. The root mean square error (RMSE) of temperature and relative humidity in the cold season were reduced by 0.3 K and 2%, respectively. The advanced NNs proposed herein offer a more stable retrieval performance compared with NNs built only by FY-3D/HIRAS data. The study results indicated the potential value in time and space domain of the NN algorithm in retrieving temperature and relative humidity profiles of the Arctic region from FY-3D/VASS observations under clear-sky conditions. All in all, this work enhances our knowledge towards improving operational use of FY-3D satellite data in the Arctic region.
